What Relaxes Autism?

October 14, 2025

Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) often experience sensory sensitivities or emotional overwhelm, so finding ways to help them relax is essential. What relaxes one autistic child might not work for another, but certain strategies are widely effective in creating calm and comfort.

Common relaxation tools include deep pressure items like weighted blankets, noise-canceling headphones, and sensory rooms that provide soothing tactile input. Many children find comfort in quiet spaces, gentle music, or familiar routines that reduce unpredictability. Activities such as swinging, drawing, or deep breathing can also help regulate emotions and restore focus.

The key is understanding each child’s sensory preferences. What may feel calming to one child, like gentle touch, might be overwhelming to another. Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy helps identify these triggers and teaches coping skills to manage stress in healthy ways.

At Inclusive ABA, we provide personalized ABA therapy in Nevada, Nebraska, and Colorado, helping children build self-regulation skills, confidence, and emotional balance in supportive environments.
