What Are Common Behaviors of Autism?

October 14, 2025

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) affects how individuals communicate, interact, and process the world around them. While every autistic person is unique, there are several common behaviors that may signal autism.

These include challenges with social interaction, such as avoiding eye contact, difficulty understanding social cues, or preferring to play alone. Repetitive behaviors are also common, like hand-flapping, rocking, or repeating phrases (echolalia). Many autistic individuals have strong preferences for routines and may become distressed by changes. Sensory sensitivities, such as being overwhelmed by loud noises, bright lights, or certain textures, are frequently observed.

Some children may show intense interest in specific topics or objects, focusing deeply and passionately. Others may struggle with verbal communication and rely on gestures or alternative methods to express themselves.

Inclusive ABA therapy helps identify and support these behaviors through personalized strategies. ABA therapy in Nevada, Nebraska, and Colorado to build communication skills, reduce challenging behaviors, and foster independence.
