Is a High IQ Linked to Autism?

October 14, 2025

A high IQ is not necessarily linked to autism, but there can be overlap in some cases. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) affects social communication, behavior, and sensory processing, while IQ measures general cognitive ability. Some individuals with autism have average or above-average intelligence, while others may have intellectual disabilities.

Studies show that a portion of autistic individuals, sometimes referred to as “twice-exceptional”, display exceptional talents or deep expertise in specific areas such as math, music, or technology. This doesn’t mean all people with autism have high IQs, but rather that autistic brains process information differently, which can lead to unique strengths in pattern recognition, memory, or problem-solving.

Recognizing and nurturing these strengths is just as important as supporting developmental challenges. With the right environment and therapy, autistic individuals can use their abilities to thrive academically, socially, and personally.

At Inclusive ABA, we provide compassionate, personalized ABA therapy in Nevada, Nebraska, and Colorado to help children with autism build on their strengths and reach their full potential.
