What Do People with Autism Behave Like?

October 14, 2025

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) affects how individuals respond to the world. While behaviors vary widely, there are common traits that help identify autism.

Many autistic individuals may prefer routines and show distress when those routines change. Repetitive behaviors, like hand-flapping, rocking, or repeating words, are also common. Social interaction can be challenging; some may avoid eye contact, struggle with conversation, or find group settings overwhelming.

Sensory sensitivities are another hallmark. Loud noises, bright lights, or certain textures may cause discomfort or lead to withdrawal. Some individuals may have intense interests in specific topics and focus deeply on them. Others may communicate in unique ways, using gestures, devices, or limited speech.

It’s important to remember that these behaviors are not “bad”, they’re expressions of how someone experiences the world. ABA therapy helps individuals build skills, reduce distress, and thrive in their environments by tailoring support to their unique needs.

At Inclusive ABA, we celebrate neurodiversity and provide compassionate, personalized ABA therapy in Nevada, Nebraska, and Colorado.
