Is Autism More Common Today Than It Was 20 Years Ago?

Yes, autism is diagnosed more often today than it was 20 years ago, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s becoming more common. The increase in autism diagnoses is largely due to better awareness, improved screening tools, and broader diagnostic criteria. In the past, many individuals with mild or subtle symptoms may not have been identified as being on the autism spectrum.

Today, doctors, educators, and parents are more informed about early signs of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), leading to earlier and more accurate evaluations. The definition of autism has also expanded to include a wider range of behaviors and support needs, which naturally increases reported numbers.


While genetics and environmental factors may play a role, the rise in diagnoses mostly reflects progress in understanding and identifying autism, not an actual surge in prevalence.
