How to Read Your Child's ABA Data: What Those Charts Actually Mean
Your BCBA turns the laptop toward you. There is a line graph on the screen with a vertical dashed line running through the middle of it, a scatter of dots, and a label you have never seen before.
Somebody says "we're seeing nice separation between phases," and everyone nods. You nod too.
Here is what you were actually looking at.
Quick Answer
How to read your child's ABA data starts with six things. Look at the level (the average height of the dots), the trend (which direction they are moving), the variability (how scattered they are), the immediacy of change after a phase line, the overlap between phases, and the consistency of the pattern. Rising lines are good on skill graphs and concerning on behavior-reduction graphs, so always check the y-axis label first. Those six features are the standard framework used to evaluate single-case data.
Anatomy of an ABA Graph
Before interpreting anything, identify the parts.

One graph usually equals one target. A child with 22 active goals has roughly 22 graphs. That is normal.
CASP describes graphing and frequent analysis of graphed data as central to the work. Behavior analysts define each target behavior in observable, measurable terms and record it from baseline through all phases of intervention.
How to Read Your Child's ABA Data: The Six-Question Method
These six features are the accepted framework for reading single-case data, used both individually and together.
1. Level
Level is the mean score for the data within a phase. Ask: where do the dots sit on average in this stretch compared to the last one?
2. Trend
Trend is the direction the dots are moving over time. Flat, climbing, or falling.
3. Variability
Variability is how much the dots bounce around. Tight clusters are easy to interpret. Wide scatter is harder, and often means something in the environment is not being controlled yet.
4. Immediacy of the effect
This is the change in level between the last three data points of one phase and the first three of the next. The faster the shift after the phase line, the stronger the case that the change caused it.
5. Overlap
Overlap is how many data points in one phase land within the range of the previous phase. Less overlap means a clearer effect.
6. Consistency of patterns
When similar phases produce similar patterns, the data are more convincing.
Immediacy is the feature that gets the least attention of the six, and researchers have noted it has multiple competing definitions in the literature.
How to Read Your Child's ABA Data: Start With the Y-Axis
A rising line is not automatically good news.
On a skill acquisition graph, the y-axis usually shows percent of correct or independent responses. Up is progress.
On a behavior reduction graph, the y-axis usually shows something like instances per hour or minutes per episode. Down is progress.
Two graphs can look identical and mean opposite things. The label on the vertical axis is the only thing that tells you which is which.
What Is Actually Being Counted
Not every ABA number is the same kind of number. CASP groups direct observation and recording procedures into continuous and discontinuous categories, and the difference affects how you read the chart.
Continuous measures attempt to capture every occurrence:
- Frequency: how many times the behavior happened
- Rate: how many times per unit of time, such as per hour
- Duration: how long each occurrence or bout lasted
- Latency: how long between a prompt and the response starting
Discontinuous measures sample the session in intervals:
- Partial interval: scored if the behavior happened at least once in the interval
- Whole interval: scored only if it continued through the entire interval
- Momentary time sampling: scored based on a glance at the end of each interval
This next point matters more than it sounds. CASP states plainly that interval-based methods produce only estimates of actual frequency or duration, because they virtually guarantee some occurrences will be missed. Estimates tend to be better when intervals are brief, 30 seconds or shorter.
So the number on an interval-recorded graph is a reasonable approximation, not a headcount. Learning how to read your child's ABA data includes asking which recording method sits behind the graph in front of you.
Why Baseline Is Supposed to Look Bad
Baseline is the stretch before intervention starts. It exists to establish where your child was before anyone taught anything.
CASP describes frequent analysis of graphed data as necessary to determine baseline levels of each target behavior, whether and how each behavior changes over time, and whether the treatment plan needs modifying.
A flat, low baseline on a skill graph is not a failure. It is the measuring stick. Without it, there is no way to prove later change came from the intervention rather than from time passing.
How to Read Your Child's ABA Data When the Line Goes the Wrong Way
Not every graph climbs. Here is what different unhelpful patterns usually prompt a BCBA to check.
- Flat line across many sessions on a skill target. The teaching procedure, prompt level, or reinforcer may need changing.
- High variability with no clear direction. Something inconsistent is happening across sessions, settings, or implementers.
- Progress that reverses after a phase change. The most recent change may have been premature or in the wrong direction.
- Improvement in the clinic that does not show at home. Generalization has not been programmed yet.
CASP directs that treatment plans be adapted and protocols modified based on patient progress, with frequent ongoing analysis. A graph going sideways is information, not a verdict.
The 80 Percent Question: What "Mastered" Actually Means
When a goal is marked mastered, that means your child hit a preset mastery criterion. The criterion is a rule, and the rules vary.
A survey of practitioners found the most commonly used mastery criterion was 80% accuracy across three consecutive sessions. The same research team then ran experiments and found that 80% across three consecutive sessions may be insufficient for producing maintenance in some cases.
A later replication evaluated 80%, 90%, and 100% accuracy across three consecutive sessions using a most-to-least prompting procedure, and noted that clinicians often report selecting their criteria based on training and supervisor preference rather than empirical support.
That same paper points out a gap worth knowing about: surveyed practitioners most commonly use 80% across three sessions, while published behavior-analytic research more often uses 90% across two sessions.
None of this means a mastered goal is fake. It means "mastered" is a threshold someone chose, and it is a completely fair question to ask which threshold your provider uses and why.
One Number to Read Carefully
Percentage of goals mastered is a tempting headline metric. It is also listed under Cautions in CASP's section on progress and outcome measures, alongside prescribed batteries of tests.
CASP also states that progress toward goals should be evaluated using multiple measures, including direct observation and caregiver report where appropriate, and that scores on any single assessment should not be used as the sole determiner of treatment decisions.
Twelve mastered goals sounds better than four. But four mastered goals in communication may change a family's daily life far more.
How to Read Your Child's ABA Data: Two Graphs, Read Out Loud
The following are illustrative composites, not individual client records.
Graph one: instances of hitting per hour. Baseline runs eight sessions, scattered between 4 and 11 per hour. High level, high variability, no trend. A phase line marks the start of a function-based plan. The first three intervention points land at 5, 3, and 2. Level drops, trend goes downward, one point overlaps with the baseline range, and by session 15 the data settle near 1. Read out loud: clear level change, downward trend, low overlap, reasonably immediate effect.
Graph two: percent correct on requesting. Six sessions hover flat between 20% and 30%. A phase line marks a change in prompting strategy. The next points read 35%, 30%, 45%, 55%, 60%. The trend turns upward, but the first two points still overlap with the old range. Read out loud: the effect is real but not immediate, so the BCBA keeps the procedure and watches two more weeks before deciding.
Same six questions. Two different conclusions.
How Often Someone Is Actually Looking at These Graphs
The graphs are not just a parent-facing summary. Reviewing and analyzing data is part of the clinical work itself.
CASP includes summarizing and analyzing data, monitoring and reporting progress, and modifying the treatment plan within its definition of case supervision, which is the behavior analyst's ongoing clinical oversight of the case. CASP states that a behavior analyst should be providing case supervision for 10 to 20 percent of the direct service hours a child receives, with the exact percentage depending on the child's programming and support needs.
For a child receiving 15 hours of direct treatment per week, that range works out to roughly 1.5 to 3 hours of clinical oversight in the same week. A meaningful portion of that time is someone looking at exactly the graphs you are being shown.
Patterns Worth Asking About
- A graph with no phase change lines at all across several months
- Long gaps with no data points and no explanation
- A y-axis that changes range between meetings, which can make identical data look different
- Session notes that describe progress the graph does not show
- Goals that stay open long after the data flatten
Behavior analysts are required to collect and use data throughout the service relationship (BACB Ethics Code, Standard 2.17), so these are reasonable things to raise.
Five Questions for Your Next Progress Meeting
- What exactly is on the y-axis of this graph, and how is it measured?
- What changed at that phase line, and why then?
- What mastery criterion are we using for this goal?
- Which goals are moving, and which ones have stalled?
- What would this graph need to show for us to change the plan?
