What Are the Do’s and Don’ts of Autism?

August 28, 2025

When supporting a child with autism, understanding the do’s and don’ts can make a significant difference in their development and well-being. Here are some essential guidelines to keep in mind:

Do’s:

  1. Be Patient – Children with autism may need extra time to process information or respond. Give them the space they need without rushing them.

  2. Use Clear, Simple Language – Avoid using complicated instructions or abstract phrases. Be as direct and clear as possible.

  3. Provide Structure Routines help children with autism feel more secure and manage transitions more easily.

  4. Offer Positive Reinforcement – Acknowledge and reward positive behaviors with praise or small incentives to encourage them.

Don’ts:

  1. Don’t Force Eye Contact – For many children with autism, making eye contact can be overwhelming. It’s important to respect their comfort level.

  2. Don’t Assume They Understand – Just because a child with autism is not responding doesn’t mean they haven’t understood. Ensure they have fully processed the information.

  3. Don’t Overwhelm Them Too much stimulation can cause anxiety. Keep environments calm and predictable.'
