What Age is Autism Usually Diagnosed?

June 16, 2025

Parents often notice early signs of autism before their child turns two—things like delayed speech, avoiding eye contact, or not responding to their name.

While signs can show up early, most children are diagnosed with autism between 18 months and 3 years old.

In some cases, especially when symptoms are milder, an autism diagnosis may not happen until a child starts school. That’s when social and communication challenges can become more noticeable.

No matter the age, getting a diagnosis can bring clarity and open the door to helpful support.

Why Timing Matters

The earlier autism is identified, the sooner families can access tools and resources to support their child’s growth. Early support for autism doesn’t just help with communication or learning—it can also ease everyday challenges and reduce family stress.

Still, every child’s journey is different. Some kids show signs early, others later—and that’s okay. What matters most is getting the right support when you need it.
