Behind the Wheel: What Research Actually Says About Autistic Teens and Driving

The most surprising fact about autistic teens and driving is one most families never hear.

According to research from the Center for Injury Research and Prevention at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), newly licensed autistic drivers have crash rates that are similar to, or lower than, their non-autistic peers. They are significantly less likely to have their license suspended, less likely to receive a traffic violation, and specifically 44% less likely to crash due to unsafe speed than non-autistic young drivers. The concern many families carry into this decision, that their autistic teen will be unsafe behind the wheel, is not supported by the data on autistic teens who complete the licensing process.


What the data does show is that the process to get there often looks different. Autistic teens who get licensed usually do so slightly later than their neurotypical peers, most commonly in their 17th year. About two-thirds of autistic teens without intellectual disability are interested in driving or currently drive, but only about one-third become licensed by age 21. The gap between interest and licensure reflects a real set of skill demands that driving involves, and a real shortage of driver education programs prepared to teach autistic students well.

What the Research Actually Shows

Most families going into the driving decision worry primarily about safety. The evidence base is meaningfully more reassuring than the concern suggests.


Key findings from CHOP's ongoing program of research, led by Allison E. Curry, PhD, MPH, and Benjamin Yerys, PhD:

  • Two out of three autistic adolescents without intellectual disability are interested in driving or currently drive
  • One out of three autistic individuals without intellectual disability get licensed by age 21
  • The majority who receive a learner's permit go on to get their license within two years
  • Most licensed autistic teens obtain their license in their 17th year, slightly later than the typical 16-to-17 range for neurotypical peers
  • Newly licensed autistic drivers have crash rates that are similar to or lower than non-autistic peers

The takeaway is not that every autistic teen should drive. The takeaway is that for autistic teens who go through the process, get properly instructed, and become licensed, the outcomes on the road are strong. The decision worth making carefully is how to prepare, not whether autistic teens can drive safely.


What Driving Actually Requires (Honestly)

Driving is not one skill. It is a coordinated set of skills, each of which can be affected differently in autism. Understanding the specific demands makes it easier to see where a particular teen is ready and where they may need more support.


Executive function

Driving requires holding a mental map of the environment, planning several moves ahead, and shifting attention quickly when conditions change. Merging onto a highway, for example, requires simultaneously watching mirrors, judging closing speeds, checking blind spots, adjusting acceleration, and deciding when to move. Executive function differences in autism can affect the speed and fluency of this kind of multi-step coordination.


Multitasking and divided attention

The visual, auditory, and motor demands of driving happen at once. A teen driver is watching the road, hearing traffic, feeling the vehicle, checking mirrors, and often navigating with a GPS. Divided attention is a genuinely difficult cognitive load for many people, and it can be especially demanding for autistic drivers whose attention style tends toward deep focus on one thing at a time.


Sensory processing

The sensory environment inside and outside a car is intense. Engine noise, wind, road vibration, traffic sounds, honking, brake lights flashing, sunlight glare, weather changes, and the tactile sensations of the steering wheel, seat, and pedals all arrive at once. Autistic teens with sensory sensitivities may find driving overwhelming in ways that neurotypical drivers do not experience.


Motor coordination

Steering, accelerating, braking, and signaling all require coordinated motor output. Fine motor differences that some autistic individuals experience can affect the smoothness and speed of these actions, particularly under stress.


Emotional regulation

Traffic is full of unexpected events. Another driver cuts you off. A pedestrian steps into the crosswalk. A police car appears in the rearview mirror. Managing an emotional response to these events, without letting the emotion affect the driving itself, is a real skill. Autistic teens whose emotional regulation is still developing may need more time to build this capacity.


Social decision-making

Some of the most consequential decisions on the road are social. Do I make eye contact with this driver to let them merge? Can I predict what this cyclist is going to do? Is that pedestrian about to cross even though the light is red? These require reading intentions and predicting behavior from subtle cues, which is one of the specific areas autistic teens may find challenging.


Interpreting unexpected situations

Perhaps most importantly, driving requires responding to situations that do not follow the usual pattern. A detour sign, a construction zone, an accident, or a driver behaving unpredictably all require rapid interpretation and adjustment. Autistic teens who thrive on predictability may find these moments especially demanding.


None of these areas is uniformly affected in every autistic teen. Some autistic teens have strong executive function and struggle with sensory processing. Others have the opposite pattern. A good pre-driving assessment identifies which specific skills need more preparation for a specific teen.


Realistic Sensory Considerations

Sensory factors deserve their own section because they are frequently the biggest surprise for families going into the driving process.

Common sensory challenges that can affect autistic drivers:

  • Traffic noise (horns, sirens, engines, motorcycles) can be dysregulating and can interfere with focus
  • Visual overload in busy or bright environments (city driving, sunset, snow glare, unfamiliar routes with many signs and signals)
  • Vibration and vestibular input from the vehicle itself, particularly on rough roads or at highway speeds
  • Tactile input from the seatbelt, steering wheel material, and seat texture
  • Interoception — a teen who does not reliably sense fatigue or hunger may drive past the point when they should stop
  • Unexpected sensory events like a sudden loud noise from a passenger, an alarm on the dashboard, or an emergency vehicle passing


Practical accommodations that families and driving instructors have used successfully include:

  • Noise-reducing (not noise-canceling) earplugs designed to preserve traffic sounds while lowering overall volume
  • Sunglasses of a specific tint that reduce glare without altering color perception significantly
  • A quiet vehicle interior during the learning phase (no radio, minimal passenger conversation)
  • Consistent practice in familiar routes before expanding to new ones
  • A specific policy about scheduled rest breaks on longer drives


These are not accommodations that continue forever. Many autistic drivers find that habituation reduces sensory load significantly with practice. But during the learning phase, accommodations matter.


Signs a Teen May Be Ready

There is no single test for driving readiness, but there are indicators that consistently predict a smoother learning process.

  • Interest and motivation to drive that comes from the teen, not primarily from the family
  • Consistent ability to follow multi-step instructions
  • Awareness of basic traffic rules and comfort using street knowledge
  • Ability to manage frustration in structured environments (school, therapy, sports)
  • Capacity to sit still and focus for at least a 30-minute period
  • Adequate visual scanning skills (can they track multiple things happening at once, even in a low-stakes setting like a playground?)
  • Awareness of their own limits and willingness to say when they need a break
  • Motor skills adequate for basic vehicle controls
  • Sensory tolerance sufficient to remain in a car for the duration of a lesson without overload

If most of these are in place, a teen is likely ready to begin the learner's permit process. If several are not, the answer is often "extended preparation," not "no."


Signs a Teen May Need More Time

Some indicators genuinely suggest that more time and skill-building will make the learning process significantly easier.

  • Frequent, hard-to-recover-from emotional dysregulation
  • Difficulty maintaining focus on multi-step tasks even in low-distraction environments
  • Sensory overload that is not reduced by accommodations
  • Significant challenges with visual scanning or depth perception (worth a professional evaluation)
  • Difficulty with basic time management, sequencing, or planning
  • Discomfort with novelty or unpredictability that has not responded to prior interventions
  • Motor coordination challenges that affect other daily tasks
  • Lack of interest from the teen themselves

None of these means the teen will not drive eventually. They mean that starting driving now would likely be frustrating and possibly unsafe. The productive question is: what specific skill-building would move a teen from "not yet" to "ready to try"?


Choosing a Driving Instructor

Perhaps the single highest-impact decision families make is who teaches the teen to drive.

Traditional driving schools are designed for the average neurotypical learner. Curriculum is usually paced to a standard test, instruction is often group-based or minimally individualized, and instructors may not have training in adapting for neurodivergent students. Many autistic teens have been turned away from traditional driving schools or dropped out because the pacing and format did not fit.


Specialized programs exist. A nationwide search published in Autism Spectrum News identified several driver education programs specifically designed for autistic learners, including:

  • Adaptive Experts (serving Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota)
  • Driving MBA (Arizona)
  • NeuroHub (Florida)
  • Strive for Independence (Illinois)
  • Driving for Exceptional Learners (Iowa)
  • Wheel to Drive (Michigan)
  • Fitness To Drive (Colorado) — funded by the Colorado Department of Transportation to develop a driving readiness program for neurodivergent youth

For families in Colorado specifically, Fitness To Drive is the notable local option and worth checking directly.


Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialists (CDRS) are professionals who are both occupational therapists and driving instructors. The Association for Driver Rehabilitation Specialists maintains a searchable directory at aded.net. A CDRS evaluation is a solid starting point for any family uncertain about readiness or who wants a structured plan.


What to look for in an instructor:

  • Experience with autistic or neurodivergent students, not just willingness to work with them
  • Ability to break skills into small, teachable pieces and give lots of practice with each
  • Patience with repetition and comfort with slow-paced progress
  • Comfort adapting instruction style to a specific learner
  • Vehicle with dual brake controls (standard for professional instructors, essential here)
  • Willingness to have parents observe sessions and reinforce techniques between lessons


Practical Preparation Strategies

Beyond the instructor, several strategies consistently improve outcomes.


Extended supervised practice periods

Most states require a minimum number of supervised hours before a teen can take the road test. For autistic teens, exceeding that minimum by a meaningful margin usually pays off. Doubling the required hours is not unreasonable, especially for teens who benefit from repetition.


Practice in a systematic, gradually increasing sequence

Start in an empty parking lot. Move to quiet residential streets in a familiar neighborhood. Add slightly busier streets. Then a low-traffic highway during a low-traffic hour. Then busier conditions. Each new environment should be introduced only after the previous one is comfortable.


Practice at different times of day and in different weather

Night driving, rain, and glare from a low sun are all specific skills that need specific practice. Do not save them for after the license.


Use free structured resources

The CHOP TeenDrivingPlan Practice Guide is a free online resource with 54 short instructional videos and structured practice guidance. Developed by CHOP researchers, it is one of the most useful free tools available for any teen learning to drive and particularly well-suited for autistic learners who benefit from clear, systematic instruction.


Consider a driving simulator

Some specialized programs, including several of the neurodivergent-focused schools listed above, begin with simulator-based instruction before behind-the-wheel work. This allows teens to build fundamental skills without real-world risk, and it lets instructors observe how a specific teen processes decisions under load.


Explore adaptive tools if relevant

Depending on individual needs, adaptive equipment may include glare-reducing mirrors, larger side mirrors to compensate for blind spots, GPS systems with simplified verbal directions, or specific dashboard configurations. A CDRS evaluation identifies what is genuinely helpful for a specific driver.


Address underlying skills before behind-the-wheel work

Executive function, emotional regulation, sensory tolerance, and motor planning can all be worked on in advance of formal driving lessons. This is a place where ongoing ABA therapy, occupational therapy, or specialized coaching can meaningfully support the driving process.


When Driving Is Not the Right Choice Right Now

For some autistic teens, driving will not be the right fit, either because of specific skill or sensory demands, or because the teen themselves is not interested. That does not mean loss of independence. Alternatives include:

  • Rideshare (Uber, Lyft, or specialized senior/disability rideshare services). Some services offer set-up assistance for repeat users.
  • Public transit in areas where it is reliable, with route practice and communication support
  • Family or scheduled community rides for regular commitments
  • Paratransit services for individuals with documented disabilities
  • Delaying, not deciding. A teen who is not ready at 16 may be ready at 20. The decision does not have to be permanent.


The important principle is that the ability to move independently through the community is the actual goal. Driving is one way to achieve it. Other options are legitimate, and the choice can change over time.


What Families Can Do at Each Stage

Pre-permit (age 14 and up)

  • Begin conversations about interest in driving
  • Consider a Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialist evaluation
  • Work on relevant underlying skills (executive function, sensory tolerance, emotional regulation) through ABA, OT, or coaching
  • Ride together and narrate driving decisions out loud
  • Explore what specialized programs exist in your area


Learner's permit

  • Enroll with an instructor experienced with neurodivergent students
  • Log significantly more supervised hours than the state minimum
  • Use the CHOP TeenDrivingPlan or a similar structured resource
  • Practice in a gradually expanding range of conditions
  • Assess readiness for the road test honestly


Provisional or intermediate license

  • Extend passenger and night-driving restrictions beyond the state minimum if that supports continued confidence

Full license and beyond

Executive function work. Building task-initiation, sequencing, working memory, and cognitive flexibility supports the mental coordination driving requires.


Emotional regulation. ABA-informed strategies for identifying, naming, and managing frustration, anxiety, and surprise translate directly to the emotional demands of the road.


Sensory tolerance. Structured, gradual exposure to sensory environments is a core ABA approach, and it can meaningfully improve tolerance for the multi-sensory environment of a moving vehicle.


Communication skills. For teens who may need to communicate with a police officer at a traffic stop, at the scene of a minor accident, or with a road-rage driver, structured practice on these scripts is genuinely useful.


Rule-following flexibility. Driving involves rules that sometimes have exceptions (right-on-red where allowed, yielding for emergency vehicles, adjusting speed for conditions). Building the capacity to hold both a rule and its exceptions supports safe on-road decision-making.
