1. Sensation Detection

This is the first stage where our senses (sight, hearing, touch, taste, smell) detect sensory stimuli from the environment. For example, you might feel the temperature of a room or hear a passing car.


2. Sensory Discrimination

After detecting the stimulus, the brain discriminates between different sensory inputs. It helps us understand what we’re experiencing. For example, we can tell the difference between the taste of salt and sugar or recognize the sound of a car horn.


3. Sensory Modulation

This stage involves the brain deciding how to respond to the sensory input. It modulates the intensity of stimuli—either ignoring less important ones or focusing on significant ones, like hearing a loud siren in a busy place.


4. Integration

Here, the brain integrates all sensory information, combining it with past experiences. For instance, if you touch something hot, your brain links the sensory input with the memory of pain, leading to the action of pulling your hand away.


5. Motor Planning/Execution

Finally, the brain uses the processed sensory information to plan and execute a physical response. For example, catching a ball involves planning the movement based on sensory input and then reaching out to grab it.


Understanding these stages is key for supporting individuals with sensory processing challenges. Some may have difficulty at one or more stages, leading to sensory overload or underreaction.
